Pasternoint vs Greasy Heel

After much research online I have bought two mud fever creams and since I don't know which one works best (and I really want to know for next time) I have decided to do a trial.

On Garbo's left hind leg - Pasternoint - a sulphur based cream
On his right hind leg - greasy Heel Animal Solutions Homeopathic cream...

So - watch this space.

any news on the mud fever? which stuff works better?

Well - it was close - very good results for both to be honest. But I think I would get the pasternoint again because it's quite greasy and waterproof like.

I have been using the Keratex Mud shield powder in the morning as a protectant as well.

Are either of them antifungals? Isn't mudfever a fungus? I'll have to check that out.

Think sulphur is antifungal but homeopathic ointments don't work on that basis.

mud fever (rain scald etc) is a bacterial infection dermatophilus congolensis (how sad when you start to know names of bacteria!!) not a fungus.

Shame you didn't have 3 horses (or at least 3 infected legs) - 1 as a control. Most of the time I have found that you can just leave it alone and it will resolve as well as with any other treatment. Depends on lots of factors, but often our attempts to treat actually do more damage than good. Upsetting the skins natural defences, pH and sometimes even creating damage that allows the bacteria access
